Ema Definition
The word Ema literally means 'Horse Picture'. There was a tradition of gifting horse to temple as an offering to gods for their help. Later this practice changed to giving picture of horse and then to picture connected to the prayer. In Japanese tradition, it refers to a votive painting. This is a practice of thanks giving to gods on fulfillment of prayers.
