Salon Des Refus Definition
Salon Des Refus (Refuses) refers to the art exhibition organized in 1863 pursuant to the orders of Emperor Napoleon III. The exhibition was held in Paris.  In 1863, the jury rejected about one third of the entries for official Salon. Consequently, many artists presented their complaints before Napoleon III. He ordered for an exhibition where the rejected artists could display their works. Édouard Manet exhibited his famous painting “Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe,” at Salon des refuses.
