Crater Definition
Crater also called krater is an ancient Greek bowl used for mixing wine with water. It has two handles, a foot, and a wide mouth. Craters are made either of metal or pottery and are often painted with scenes of a romantic pair dining or relaxing, hunting scenes, and pictures of traditional men and women. Large kraters may have horizontal or vertical handles and is shaped like an inverted bell. These bowls which were also used during religious ceremonies to hold libations were mostly red-figured. It is also known as a calyx krater. At times they were also used as vases.
