Androcentrism Definition
The term Androcentrism was introduced initially by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, a prominent American feminist, sociologist and writer, as an analytic concept. Androcentrism refers to a societal fixation or practice of placing male view point at the center of the world, its history, and culture. Per this concept a masculine view point or characteristic is considered privileged over a feminine view point or characteristic. In the art world, male artists and their point of view dominated and continue to dominate the art world. Female artists were under-represented and are still under-represented in the world of art. There is considerable under representation of female artists in art institutions and under valuation of female artist's work in art museums. In 1985, Guerilla Girls, a female artists group from NewYork protested to the concept of androcentrism that dominated the art world.
