Angel Definition
The term Angel refers to a hammered gold coin in use during 15th to 17th century. The Angel was introduced by Edward IV (1461-1470) to replace the ten shilling Royal which became unpopular then. Angel's initial value was a third of a pound or 6s 8d and later revalued to 11 shillings. Angel depicts St Micheal spearing a dragon and the name for the coin comes from this design. Angels continued to be produced until the final issue was minted under Charles I in 1643.
