Ultramarine Definition
Ultramarine is a blue pigment prepared by grinding lapis lazuli, a deep blue semi-precious stone. Ultramarine blue was the finest and highly expensive blue considered to be used by Renaissance painters. These painters used ultramarine blue to color robes of the Virgin Mary and to symbolize humanity and holiness. In 1826, a synthetic ultramarine was invented as a substitute to the original expensive pigment.
