Tobacco Jar Definition
Tobacco jars are used to store pipe tobacco to protect them from humidity and air. In the early eighteenth century tobacco was stored in paper or cloth bags. However, in the second half of eighteenth century tobacco was kept in jars. These jars were made of wood, tin, pewter, porcelain or ceramic and sometimes had unusual shapes and colors. For example the bisque, a type of fired piece of unglazed ceramic ware had baby doll or its head. In the later years, tobacco jars were less ornate. However, now with passage of time as tobacco jars have become a rarity, they are very much is demand as collectibles.
