Newcomb Definition
Newcomb, in relation to antiques, is a type of pottery. Newcomb pottery, also known as Newcomb College Pottery, was a brand of pottery in America produced during the period 895-1940. In 1895, its founders, Ellsworth and William Woodward worked at Sophie Newcomb College in Louisiana. Most of these wares were designed during the period 1900 and 1910. The pieces had blue-green color with incised decorations highlighted with black. The company started using matte glaze and relief designs after 1910. These art wares had printed marks with alphabets NC. They also had incised initials of the artists.
