Netsuke Definition
The term ‘Netsuke’ refers to a sculptural object in Japanese art introduced in seventeenth century which developed over three hundreds of years. Netsuke are basically a belt toggle which is carved using ivory or wood. Netsuke was traditionally used to secure a purse or a small container that hung from the belt of a kimono. A Netsuke represents a wide variety of subjects such as animals, flowers, characters from religion, or mythology. Netsuke became less popular in the late 19th century, with the popular use of Westernized styles of clothing.
