Kolinsky Definition
Kolinsky is a species of weasel (Mustela sibirica) found from Siberia to Japan. Its bushy tail is used for finest “sable” brushes.
In relation to art, Kolinsky refers to sable hair brush used by artists that are quite expensive. The hair or the bristles come in pale red color with darker tips and is known for its superior strength, fineness and flexibility when compared to other sable brushes. The hair of the male species is taken to make the finest brushes. Ordinarily, a 60:40 proportion of male-female hair is taken to make the brush. The best Kolinsky Sables are typically used in Watercolor brushes. Lesser grades of Kolinsky Sables are also often used in oil painting, and sometimes for glazing in acrylics.
