Bokuseki Definition
The term Bokuseki is a Japanese term which means "traces of ink." Bokuseki refers to a form of Japanese calligraphy which is called Shodo and is more specifically a style of Zenga developed by Zen monks. The characteristics of Bokuseki are that it is bold, assertive, and usually the abstract brush strokes meant to prove the calligrapher’s pure state of mind. Bokuseki is supposed to denote one’s single-moment awareness by brushing each word or passage with a single breath, eventually displaying one’s Zazen practice into physical and artistic action. Basically, Bokuseki is a reflection of one’s natural action free from one’s artificial or realistically oriented mind.
