Wood Engraving Definition
Wood engraving is a form of printmaking. The reversed design is first engraved on a block of wood and ink is spread on the wooden piece. This is then printed on paper. Once a design is engraved on a piece of wood, any number of prints can be taken from the same wood. Block wood is commonly used for wood engraving.
Wood engraving is different from woodcut. In wood engraving, the design is engraved into the surface of the wood unlike in woodcut where the design is carved on the surface of the wood.
