Verisimilitude Definition
Verisimilitude is the state of appearing to be true or real. The term verisimilitude originated from two Latin words: ‘Verum’ which connotes truth and ‘similis’ which means similar. In a broader sense, verisimilitude means the level till which a story, irrespective of whether it is fictional or non-fictional, seems to be true or probable. In the context of painting and art work, the term may be used to refer to the true-to-life depiction of objects or landscapes. Versimilitude paintings and art work were seen during the Hellenistic, classical Greek, and the Roman art period.
