Reformation Definition
The term reformation refers to a religious movement in Western Europe during the sixteenth century intended to reform some doctrines and practices of the Roman Catholic Church which eventually led to the evolution of Protestant Churches. The Protestant leaders were against icons and other religious paintings and sculpture promoted by Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, art in Protestant Reformation depicted humble scenes from Bible and moral values of contemporary period. This was followed by Counter-Reformation led by Catholic Church which gave a revival in painting and sculpture. The art of the period is also known as Baroque art. Elaborate frescoes made in churches and palaces during the early 15th century are an example of Baroque art.
