Petroglyph Definition
The term petroglyph is derived from the Greek word petra which means stone and glyphein which means to carve. The two terms were coined to form a term petroglyphe which is the French version of the Engish term petroglyph. Petroglyphs are those images that are engraved or carved in rocks of high altitude. Prehistoric people used to draw on rocks with sticks, stones and natural colours the images of animals and people they see. These carvings were so close to nature and depicted the life in a forest of these ancient people. Sculptures and rock formations are also termed as petroglyphs by the scientists.
