Muromachi Definition
Muromachi refers to the period in Japanese history when the members of Ashikaga family were shoguns. The Chinese style ink painting, accepted as a means to teach Zen doctrine, is a notable feature of the period. The Chinese custom of drinking powdered tea was also adopted during this period. This brought tea aesthetic called chanoyu developed during Muromachi period. Chanoyu appreciated garden designing, architecture, calligraphy, painting, floral arrangements and decorative arts.
