Leaf Definition
In the context of art, leaf refers to the thin sheets of metal to be used as a coating on wood, stone or another metal. The process is known as gilding. Gold was the common object of gilding in ancient Greek and Rome. Chinese preferred bronze leaf to gold. In Europe silver was the commonly used leaf in gilding. The term leaf also refers to the pages of a book.
