The Italian term is usually used as short form intarsia. Intarsia refers to inlay work mostly in wood. To make an intarsia the template pieces are cut and glued to a hard surface. In wooden intarsia different types of wood may be used to reflect different colors. Intarsia is made out of other materials like mother-of-pearl and marble also.
