Kanshitsu Definition
Kanshitsu is a technique followed in Japanese sculpture and decorative art. In Japanese, Kanshitsu literally means "dry lacquer." A hollow sculpture is formed by building layers of lacquer strengthened with hemp over a clay core. Two varieties of kanshitsu are known as hollow kanshitsu (called dakkatsu) and wood-core kanshitsu (mokushin).
