Kakemono Definition
A Japanese scroll painting or calligraphy is known as kakemono. The painting or calligraphy is mounted with silk fabric to hang vertically. For storage purposes it is rolled. It is also known as kakejiku meaning hung scroll.
In Japan, during the Heian period it was introduced in Japan to display Buddhist imageries or used as depict calligraphy or poetry. Later in Muromachi period, themes like flowers, birds, landscapes were depicted along with calligraphy and poetry.
