Ground Definition
In art or painting, ground refers to a surface to which paint is applied, or the material used to create that surface. Ground has to be prepared before painting is started on it. When oil paint is to be done on canvas, ground is prepared by applying oil and white pigment. In wood surfaces, it is either an oil ground or gesso.
