Fayum Portraits Definition
Fayum Portraits dates back to Romano – Egyptian period. The funerary paintings were made on wooden panels and covered the face of mummified body. The portraits were found mostly in Fayum basin in Egypt and hence the name. The lifelike portraits were usually encaustic (wax) paintings.
