Expressionism Definition
Expressionism is an artwork, for example painting, in which the artist tries to express or depict the inner emotions rather than the external qualities. Here the emphasis is on the facial features and expression, which is used to communicate the attitude or convey something. In this type of artwork, the artist tries to communicate the inner emotions by emphasis and distortion. Expressionism can be found in artworks of all times. The term is also used to refer to an artistic and literary movement which originated in Germany, during commencement of the twentieth century. Friedrich Nietzsche, August Strindberg, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, James Ensor, and Sigmund Freud were the principal persons behind the inception of this movement.
