Cowan Pottery Definition
Cowan Pottery Studio was founded in 1912 in Lakewood, Ohio by R. Guy Cowan. Cowan pottery were the producers of art pottery and wares, vases and bowls called Lakewood Ware for florists. There were also buildings that housed Cowan pottery in Rocky River and it stands till today. It was renamed Cowan Potters, after it was moved to Rocky River. These potteries were produced for both artistic and commercial purposes. The artistic styles were influenced by Arts and Crafts Movement, Art Deco, Chinese ceramics, and modern sculpture. The mark used in potteries was the word 'Cowan' engraved in a stylized font. Cowan had skilled artisans as staffs to work at the pottery. Some of the staffs were students of Cowan at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
