Commode Definition
The term commode in the context of antiques refers to low lying chest, or drawers. Commodes were considered an essential piece of furniture in the 18th Century. Bombé commodes of Rococo style had surfaces designed in three dimensions. Another style, known as "Louis Seize" commodes had deep drawers. Chamber pots were kept inside the commode and pitcher and bowl were kept on the surface, especially for use in the night. This is the reason for confusing the term commode with toilet.
