Batchelder Definition
In antiques, the term is generally used to refer to products that were designed/made by Ernest Batchelder, a leading designer of the arts and crafts movement of America. Ernest Batchelder first established his tile studio in Pasadena in 1909. Later he expanded his business (partnering with others) and made decorative tiles. Early designs were in shapes of birds, animals, flowers, Viking ships, and tendrils. Mayan design and landscape tiles were also seen. Batchelder tiles were used on walls, floors, bookends, and on fountain rooms etc. Later the company also made earthenware. We can see marks such as Batchelder Los Angeles and Batchelder Pasadena on Batchelder products.
