Verso Definition
In the context of art, ‘verso’ is mainly used to refer to the back side of an art work such as a painting, drawing, or sculpture (in cases where the sculpture is not carved and shaped at the back ). Some artists do interesting things on the verso of their art work. For example, Leonardo da Vinci's (15th century) portrait of Ginevra De' Benci. Generally, the term verso refers to the rear or back side of a paper in a codex, manuscript, book, pamphlet, or any other bound or unbound document/paper. The term is also used to refer to the left hand page of an open book. In addition, the term is seen used to refer to the front and rear sides of two sided objects on which paintings are done. Coins, medals, and panels are examples of two sided objects that possess a verso.
