Torquay Definition
Torquay refers to ceramic earthenware by potteries in and around Torquay, England. These potteries existed from 1870 to 1962. Some of the major potteries were Watcombe Pottery (1870-1962); Aller Vale (1881-1924); Torquay Terra-Cotta Company (1875-1905); Torquay Pottery (1908-1940); and Longpark (1883-1957). At first, the potteries used local red clay to make classical-style art pottery vases and figurines. Later after 1900s, they began making souvenir wares. Sgraffitto and scandy designs were used. The ceramics were dipped in colored slip and decorated with painted slip. Designs depicted mottoes or proverbs, scenes of cottages, ships, birds, or flowers.
