Spode Definition
The word Spode, when used in the context of antiques, refers to the pottery made in the factory established by Josiah Spode in 1776. It was later known as Copeland Spode. The Spode pottery perfected the use of bone-ash in earthenware and hence named ‘Bone China’. The ‘blue-on-pearl’ china became the most distinctive Spode product for decades. They also produced basalts, red wares and cane wares.
