Pyxis Definition
The term Pyxis refers to a type of ceramic vessel which the ancient Greeks used to store cosmetics, perfumes trinkets or jewellery. The term Pyxides is the plural form of Pyxis. Pyxis is usually cylindrical with a separate lid. It relates back to the classical world. Most surviving pyxides today are Greek pottery, but chiefly in later periods there had been pyxides in wood, metal, ivory, or other materials. Pyxides are exhibited in several museums in the world, some being, The Walters Art Museum, Altes Museum, Italy, National Museum in Warsaw.
