Parsol is a light umbrella that is designed to protect one from sun. Ancient parasols were not waterproof. Traditionally, parasols were used by the royals. The parasols were held over the head of the King/Queen by their attendants. We can see ancient sculptures and carved art work depicting such scenes. King Louis XIII of France is said to be the owner of the first umbrella (as early as 1637). Parasols were found in different colors and often had a wooden handle. Ancient parasols were unfoldable types. However, by the 17th century foldable parasols started to appear. In the 19th century, parasols were widely used as a fashion accessory. Multicolored parasols with gold and silver lace were made.
