Orpiment Definition
The term orpiment was derived from the Latin term auripigmentum were, aurum means gold and pigmentum means pigment. Orpiment existed naturally as a yellow mineral in crystalline form and was earlier called auripigment. It is a deep yellow coloured pigment produced artificially out of its crystalline form. It is a chemical compound carrying chemical properties and is scientifically called arsenic sulphide. These mineral compounds are commonly found in volcanic fumaroles, low temperature hydrothermal veins, and hot springs. Orpiment can also be obtained as a byproduct of realgar when decayed. Orpiment was used as fly poison and was traded during Roman Empire period. This element made way for the search of gold.
