Marblehead Definition
Marblehead, in the context of antiques, refers to the pottery made by the inmates of Marblehead sanatorium in Massachusetts, as part of a rehabilitative program under the leadership of Dr. Hall. The Marblehead Pottery established in 1905 was separated from the sanatorium in 1908 and continued in business till 1936. The pieces produced in Marblehead were hard and pebbled. They had a matte finish. Marblehead products included, among others, tiles, vases, baskets and bookends.
