Hampshire Definition
The term Hampshire, in the context of antiques, refers to the pottery made in Keene, New Hampshire. Hampshire pottery was established by James Scollay Taft and was in business from 1871 to 1923. The company made majolica and the wares had pink, olive green, blue and yellow glazes. The wares with matte green glaze similar to Grueby green were among the popular wares made by the company. The Hampshire wares were marked with Hampshire Pottery, Keene, NH and J.S.T. & Co. Hampshire pottery patterns include bowls, pitchers, vases, candlesticks and biscuit jars.
