Deaccession Definition
The term ‘deaccession’ refers to the process of removing a particular art work from among the permanent collections of a museum. The term may also be used to refer to an art work which is already removed. Normally, artworks are deaccessioned for the purpose of sale or in exchange for acquiring another art work(s). During the 1980s, certain museums adopted the practice of selling certain art works for secondary/redundant prices for the purpose of acquiring other art works. But strong criticisms cropped up opposing such deaccession.
