Chant Definition
The word ‘chant’ in relation to antiques is associated with auction. When a lot is offered, the auctioneer calls out certain numbers and short phrases that indicate the bid amount and the next higher amount. This is known as the auctioneer’s chant. Auction chant is a rhythmic combination of filler words and numbers. Clarity is the most important aspect of a chant.
