Britannia Definition
Britannia, when used in the context of antiques, is seen used to refer to Britannia silver. Britannia is actually a combination of tin, antimony, and copper. The Britannia standard originated in Britain around the late 17th century. This standard was developed as a controlling measure to prevent or restrict British sterling silver coins from being converted into silver plate or other silver ware by melting it. There is also a company by name ‘Britannia Antique’ that was set up in 1903. The company deals in antique furniture.  Its stock includes furniture from the 18th century.
