Haniwa Definition
Haniwa are figures made up of terracotta clay that are primarily used for ritual use. During the Kofun Period, these figures were buried along with the dead as funerary objects. The figures were designed by building up the mounds of coiled clay to shape the figure, layer by layer. Haniwa figures were mainly designed using water-based clay and dried into a coarse and absorbent material that withstood the test of time. The vital forms of Haniwa are spotted in southern Honshu-especially the Kinai region around Nara-and northern Kyushu. Besides, using these figures for funeral purposes, the figures were also used for retaining a wall for the burial mound.
