Morphy’s to host live auction of outstanding Western art and antiques on June 20, during the 36th Annual Old West Show in Santa Fe

SANTA FE, NM – Collectors of Western art and antiques will have two reasons to visit historic Santa Fe, New Mexico, over the weekend of June 19-21. The first is the 36th Annual Old West Show, a lively event where the best dealers from across the country will showcase hundreds of high-quality items for every level of collector. The show will be held June 20, with public show hours from 9am-4pm MT; and Sunday, June 21, from 9am-3pm MT. Admission is $10 each day.
Shortly after the Day 1 show conclusion on June 20, reason number two will present itself: a 515-lot Old West & Native American Art Auction conducted by Morphy Auctions. The auction’s start time is 5pm MT (7pm ET), and all forms of remote bidding will be available, including absentee, by phone, via mobile app, or live online through Morphy Live.
The comprehensive array of auction merchandise includes Western fine and decorative art; cowboy apparel; saddles, spurs, bridles, bits and chaps by noted makers; Native American art, textiles and pottery; relics; antique firearms and holsters; Hollywood cowboy memorabilia, antique and contemporary belt buckles and other silverwork; lawmen’s badges, Old West advertising, photos and lithography, and more.
The auction’s headliner is Lot 1325, a Manhattan Arms Navy Series IV Single Action Percussion Revolver with ownership attributed to the outlaw Jesse James. The weapon was reportedly used by James at the robbery of the Southern Bank of Kentucky in Russellville, Kentucky, on March 20, 1868. A letter signed by James’s son Jesse Edward James and daughter-in-law Stella James attest to the legend. The pistol, Serial #64240, is estimated at $100,000-$150,000.
A wonderfully-detailed sculpture titled The Rattlesnake by the renowned American sculptor Frederic Remington (1861-1909) was cast in 1,000+ troy ounces of .999 silver. The 17-inch-tall sculpture, #3 from an edition of 100, was cast at the Maiden Foundry in Oregon in 1989. With the price of silver reaching record highs, this exquisite work is not just displayable Western art; it is also a fine investment piece. Estimate: $70,000-$100,000
The first silver parade saddle built by Nolte-Olsen in San Francisco represents the pinnacle of high-end parade saddles produced by Al Nolte, circa 1937. The silversmith responsible for the fine decorations was Robert Schaezlein, who operated a shop out of San Francisco, and the tooling was by Gene Sisco. The saddle is in pristine condition, having been mounted on a horse only twice since its inception in 1937. It is accompanied by an original 1930s photograph of the Nolte-Olsen storefront. Estimate: $40,000-$60,000
Of special appeal to antique rifle collectors, a New Haven Arms Model 1860 Henry lever-action rifle was manufactured circa 1864 during the Civil War. These .44 caliber beauties were popular, often continuing their service post-war on the frontier. Estimate: $30,000-$40,000
Lot 1359 is an extremely rare 18K pink gold Waltham hunting cased pocket watch with exceptional alternating inlaid panels of pink and white gold-quartz surrounding a central yellow gold California grizzly bear. The watch is fitted with a size 18, 21-jewel, circa-1889 Vanguard-grade lever-set movement. The case diameter is 54mm. The white porcelain Roman numeral dial has blued steel spade hands and the gross weight is 138.7 grams. The watch is running and in good working order. Estimate: $20,000-$30,000
A Native American 9-inch-tall, mid-20th-century San Ildefonso (P’Ohwhogeh) vase was a collaborative effort between Maria Martinez (1887-1980) and Popovi Da (1923-1971). The vase features a long neck surmounting a band containing Avanyu, a water guardian and a deity of the Tewa people, depicted as a plumed serpent with a sinuous body, suggestive of the flow of water or the zigzag of lightning. The vase is incised Maria/Popovi both on the jar’s base and side. Estimate: $12,000-$20,000
Lot 1154 is a cased group of six original artifacts related to the infamous Texas outlaw, gunfighter, lawyer and folk icon John Wesley Hardin (1853-1895). The grouping includes two gambling chips from the Acme Saloon in El Paso, Texas, where Hardin was killed on August 19, 1895; an authentic shot poker card with original Hardin signature and four bullet holes executed by Hardin, signed and dated J.W. Hardin / 4-6-1895; an original Hardin calling card, and a chit from the Wigwam Saloon (El Paso), signed by Hardin five days before he was killed. Estimate: $10,000-$15,000
It doesn’t get more Western than a hitched horsehair bridle with original kissing-bird-style half-breed bit crafted in a Montana prison. The bridle is executed in a black-on-cream ground with bright color combinations of turquoise, pink, orange, green, purple, red and blue colors throughout. Domed rosette conchos with nickel edges display images of horse heads and running horses. Estimate: $8,000-$10,000
A beautiful pair of Kiowa (Cauigu) high-top women’s moccasins is covered in bright green pigment and bursting with colors of blue, translucent red, white-center-red, white, black and green. There are beaded strips on each side of the brass buttons and around the ankle, and each moccasin has a beaded star. Estimate: $3,000-$5,000
Lots 1269-1289 are all dedicated to Fred Harman (1902-1982), the American cartoonist best known for the popular Red Ryder comic strip he drew for 25 years, reaching 40 million readers through 750 newspapers. Items include Red Ryder dailies and storyboards, a handmade art book (Southwest Indians As I See Them), oil-on-canvas paintings, prints on board, pen-and-ink drawings, gouache-on-paper works, etchings on gold-backed vellum sheet, and bound volumes of The Norman (Okla.) Transcript newspaper. Estimates range from $200-$400 at the lower end to $3,800-$6,800 at the upper end.
Lots 1363-1377 all pertain to Harley May (1926-2008), most widely known for having been a three-time World Champion Steer Wrestler and a top competitor in all seven rodeo events. Items include saddles, engraved silver belt buckles, trophies, horse bits, ranch signs and rodeo items; spurs, rawhide reins and reatas, cowboy hats, and his tooled-leather traveling briefcase, albums and shaving kit bag.
